Penrith the largest town close to Ullswater is only 3 and a half hours form London or two and a half hours from Birmingham by train and a single ticket can be purchased for £16.50 from London if bought 2 weeks in advance.
From Windermere train station there is the YFLA shuttle bus to Patterdale or from Penrith train station there is a 2 hourly stage coach bus.

By Bus
Stagecoach in Cumbria Explorer tickets are valid on all Stagecoach buses for periods of a day, a week or seven days. Reductions for children are available, and tickets can be bought on the bus or at TICs.

108 PENRITH - PATTERDALE
This service is operated by Stagecoach and runs regularly providing easy access to the Ullswater from Penrith train station and Penrith town centre.

208 KESWICK - PATTERDALE
This service is being supported by the Friends of the Lake District and the Lake District National Park Authority.
The service will run on Saturday and Sundays from 24th May 2008 (plus Bank Holiday Monday 26th May) until 13th July and then daily from 19th July to 31st August 2008
