The Rheged Centre, Penrith, is at the northern gateway to the English Lake District, has a vibrant arts and family events programme and welcomes 450,000 visitors every year. In addition to the award winning Gallery, giant cinema, indoor and outdoor play and pottery and block printing workshop, you will also find individual shops selling children’s books and toys, outdoor gear and gadgets, local food and drink in our Foodhall, niche skincare, quality clothing and British wool products all of which champion provenance, craftsmanship and design. Our cafes at Rheged which serve local seasonal produce. Rheged is a family business which is rooted in Cumbria and it’s also a building of architectural merit, with one of the largest grass roofs in the country.

Rheged is located just off the M6 (J40) at the northern gateway to the Lake District, a short 6 minute drive from Pooley Bridge on Ullswater.

Our huge 3D cinema screen, generous gallery space and programme of creative events make us a vibrant home for the arts in Cumbria. Our arts programme includes everything from children’s theatre and craft to opera, ballet and theatre streamed live on our 3D cinema screen, the largest in the region. Our modern gallery space hosts five art, photography and craft exhibitions a year. There is also a range of shows and fairs throughout the year, from crafts to wellbeing, interiors, gardening, and food.

Children can have some serious fun with our indoor and outdoor play areas, pottery painting sessions, creative workshops and captivating film and family theatre.  Family means everything to us and we have developed a packed programme of unusual workshops aimed at inspiring children with new crafts and skills. Our indoor and outdoor play areas, pottery painting, children’s film and theatre provide variety and choice for our younger visitors.

Good food and drink is important to us. As farmers we believe in Cumbrian produce, and we offer handmade, local food in as many delicious ways as we can. With three cafés, an ice cream shop, a cookery school and food hall, there’s plenty to try.

Browse our shops and you’ll find products from desirable brands, specialist companies and local makers, all chosen with care and enthusiasm by our team of buyers. Whether you’re looking for clothing to explore the outdoors, children’s toys, art materials or niche skincare, our shops have a handpicked collection from both small local makers and hard-to-find brands. Just beyond our selection of elegant womenswear, you’ll find our tranquil beauty treatment rooms too.
